Downstream Service - Economical Functions

The objective of the service is to provide up to date information of the forest structure and health conditions. Satellite image analysis for the estimation of relevant forestry parameters (stem volume, tree species) will be further developed to include accuracy assessment as an integral part of the procedures. The analysis will also include forest damage assessment by selecting the potentially vulnerable regions which, in Finland, mostly consist of old spruce forests.

The EO data types will include SPOT type optical data, RapidEye-optical data and VHR (very high resolution) optical data, all in combination with ground reference data.

  • The more detailed downstream products including forest area map and stem volume maps by tree species spruce, pine, and broadleaved trees based on the following data:
  • Spot equivalent data and ground reference data (In Finland, P1 and experimentally in Russia, P2)
  • A two-stage approach with Spot equivalent data, VHR optical data, and ground reference data (In Finland, P3 and experimentally in Russia, P4)
  • RapidEye data and ground reference data (In Finland only, P5)

This service includes the following products:

  • P1: Stem Volume Map by Tree Species (pine, spruce, broadleaved trees) using Spot equivalent data in Finland (ground resolution 20 m)

  • P2: Stem Volume Map by Tree Species (pine, spruce, broadleaved trees) using Spot equivalent data in Russia (ground resolution 20 m)

  • P3: Stem Volume Map by Tree Species (pine, spruce, broadleaved trees) using Spot equivalent and VHR data (ground resolution 1 m) in Finland

  • P4: Stem Volume Map by Tree Species (pine, spruce, broadleaved trees) using Spot equivalent and VHR data (ground resolution 1 m) in Russia

  • P5: Stem Volume Map by Tree Species (pine, spruce, broadleaved trees) using RapidEye data (ground resolution 6 m) in Finland

  • The products for the designated area to be delivered include:

  • The Geoland 2 core product using Image 2006, Image 2009 or even more recent EO data from the selected area of interest. The Geoland core product of forest density and main species classes will be specifically produced for the Russian site using the methods, developed in Geoland 2.

  • The accuracies and confidence intervals of the product maps

Use of GMES Core Data Sets (HR Forest Layers and Core Image Data)

The Geoland 2 core products of forest density and three forest classes will serve as the baseline and as the first estimate of wood resources. The expected benefit of the use of the core products is a better separation of tree species and improved accuracies in the (species-wise) forest variables. Also the process flow for the output products will be simplified, if the core products are found useful.

The Finnish test area is located in South-eastern Finland centered at 61° 20´ N/ 28° 00´ E with the approximate size of 1 300 000 ha.

EUFODOS - RussiaTest area 2: Russia - Nizhniy Novgorod

The role of another area in Russia is to implement and validate the developed procedures in another type of boreal forest with a different forest management regime. The area is located south of the city Nizhniy Novgorod and centered at 55° 30´ N/ 43° 00´ E with the approximate size of 214 000 ha.
